This capability allowed the Navy to project naval power around the world and far from home ports.
The Type 903 replenishment ship entered service with the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy in 2003. The class' chief designer was Zhang Wende. After two units completed, a pair of slightly modified units designated as Type 903A followed, and the main difference between Type 903 and Type 903A is that the displacement of the latter is increased to 23,000 tons from the original 20,500 ton.

Background. The Type 908 was the second stage in Chinese replenishment ship development and construction. A replenishment oiler or replenishment tanker is a naval auxiliary ship with fuel tanks and dry cargo holds which can supply both fuel and dry stores during underway replenishment at sea. Many countries have used replenishment oilers. The United States Navy's hull classification symbol for this type of ship was AOR. Replenishment oilers are slower and carry fewer dry stores than the U.S. Navy's modern fast combat support ships, which carry the classification AOE. The ship carried a mixed crew of 135 Navantia and RAN personnel during the trials. The 19,500-tonne and 173.9 m-long vessel, which is based on the Cantabria-class AOR, will soon depart the company’s facilities in the Spanish coastal city of Ferrol and is expected to arrive at Fleet Base West in Western Australia in late September for equipment fit-out.
